China Medical University Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology| Mira Miao

“Whenever I feel like giving up, I think back to that night in 9th grade, when I cried under the covers after my disappointing scores in the high school entrance exam.” Raised in prestigious schools all the way — from Yuren Elementary to the junior high division of Weidao — Mira Miao faced the first major setback of her life, and it hit hard. The bitterness of that moment drove her to promise herself she would give her all over the next three years to earn a place at a top university — and she really did it!

With the school’s night classes and cram school classes alternating nonstop, Mira spent the summer before 12th grade immersed in her studies, often staying late at the library or in study rooms, relentlessly solving practice problems and exams. She even had to see a doctor due to high intraocular pressure from overstudying. Yet, in the final days leading up to the university entrance exam, she felt surprisingly calm — because she knew she had already given her all, and the rest was up to fate. She also realized she was no longer that fragile 9th grader but someone who could withstand pressure and fight to the end for her goals.

How does she handle stress? Mira’s coping methods are swimming, watching movies, and playing guitar in the pop music club. These were her emotional outlets, helping her reset and start afresh. When asked about teachers she is grateful for, the first person who comes to mind is her Chinese teacher, who could always turn classical texts into fascinating and profound stories. Chinese became the subject Mira found easiest to prepare for, and she earned a top-tier score on the exam. In addition, the ESL courses at Wagor and the dedicated foreign teachers made Mira feel “like I was back in elementary school, rediscovering the joy of learning English.”

Looking ahead, Mira plans to apply for the five-year integrated master’s and doctoral program at China Medical University, aiming for the opportunity to study abroad as an exchange student and move toward her dream of working in medical forensics. She firmly believes that “only by continuously stepping out of your comfort zone can you achieve true growth and success.”

Chung Shan Medical University Department of Physical Therapy|Linda Wang

Linda Wang’s high school journey was shaped by a spirit of initiative and self-discovery. At first, she didn’t have a clear vision for her future, and choosing a medical-related field wasn’t something she had planned from the outset. However, as her studies progressed, she gradually developed a passion for mastering and applying technical skills. She hoped to one day use those abilities to help others and make a positive impact. That goal ultimately led her to set her sights on the Department of Physical Therapy at Chung Shan Medical University.

Remarkably, Linda wasn’t originally in the science track during her sophomore year of high school. Her decision to switch tracks required a complete shift in both her learning strategies and mindset. To catch up on science subjects, she dedicated a great deal of time to self-study and review. Step by step, she built a solid foundation in human anatomy and medical concepts—developing perseverance and determination along the way.

One experience that stood out for her was a “simulated public hearing” in a research and hands-on course. In this project, students were encouraged to research public issues, debate differing viewpoints, and present their findings. Guided by her teachers, Linda learned how to think logically, collaborate effectively, and express her views clearly in group settings. More importantly, this experience helped her realize that she thrives in practical, results-driven environments—where her work has visible and concrete outcomes. That realization gave her greater clarity about her future path.

Drawing from her own experience, Linda offers some advice to younger students: “Don’t be afraid to explore or change direction, and don’t worry if you move at a slower pace than others. What matters most isn’t starting on the ‘right’ path—it’s having the courage to try, to adjust, and to grow.  Even if the journey includes setbacks or uncertainty about the future, as long as you're willing to face your doubts and shortcomings, those experiences will ultimately become valuable assets.
