Admission to National ChengChi University - Su Yun Yi
When I was in grade 8, I moved to Shanghai with my parents, and attended an American international school. Later, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we returned to Taiwan, where I joined a self-study group. As the domestic education system places a strong emphasis on the results of the entrance exams, I was faced with some difficulties in choosing a senior high school. Additionally, since my parents couldn't take care of me by my side, factors such as school transportation and accommodation became important considerations. Through the introduction of my mother’s friend, I got to know Wagor High School. It offers convenient transportation, modern dormitories, ESL courses, a second foreign language as an elective, and personal iPad-based self-directed learning, which are similar to the learning environment I experienced in the American international school, and I felt they would be beneficial for my future studies, both domestically and internationally. Therefore, I chose to study at Wagor High School.
Regarding exam preparation, I usually make a review plan two weeks before midterm exam; for the university entrance exam, I started the review plan during the winter break of the second semester of grade 11. In terms of the study plan for my high school, I first developed the habit of previewing before class and reviewing after class. In the second year, it was crucial to determine my personal academic track, and I am grateful that the school provided numerous resources for us to explore different subject areas. The third year was all about giving my best efforts and continuously practicing various question types to build and maintain a certain level of proficiency.
The key to my academic performance was to listen attentively in class, implement post-class reviews, and take notes diligently. I believe meticulous notes are important because they provide a record of our learning journey. During class, I would jot down key points, and during review, I would digest and absorb the information, creating a memory map. Practicing questions served as a way to check my understanding of what I had learned. Whenever I didn't understand something, I actively sought my teachers’ help with key points and methods for problem-solving, and I would consolidate and integrate the information from these consultations in my notebook. Before exams, I would repeatedly practice the questions from my notebook to better grasp the material and form connections among the topics. In addition, when answering questions, you should set a time limit to create similar feelings of the exam, especially to mathematics. You’ll find out how well you can do under pressure, and train yourself to stay calm. In this way, you can always give full play to your strength during exams.
I chose to major in psychology at National ChengChi University because I have always been interested in the subject, and because in this era of rapid technological advancements, the fast-changing environment has led to increased anxiety among many individuals–myself included–making soft skills increasingly important. I look forward to deepening my understanding of my own highly sensitive person (HSP) traits and utilizing them to help myself and others in need.
Wagor has provided me with a high-quality language learning environment, which has in turn helped me acquire excellent English skills, expand my horizons, and develop a greater understanding and concern about global events. The innovative use of iPads and electronic whiteboards in teaching has made learning easier and more efficient, eliminating the waste and inconveniences of paper materials. Additionally, my teachers have always been patient and willing to understand what we need, providing timely care and assistance. This has been a great support for me. Although the student population is small, we have access to many resources, and the atmosphere of cooperation among classmates in various activities is something I truly enjoy.
Finally, I would like to advise my juniors to develop a study plan. Also, when falling behind, they should urge themselves to utilize fragmented time effectively to catch up, rather than unknowingly waste their precious time[1] . For students who are still unsure about their academic interests, I recommend participating in exploration courses or attending university camps before the second year of high school. This not only helps you understand your inclinations but also adds value to your self-directed learning journey. Focus and self-discipline are crucial, especially for online courses. Avoid spending too much time on social media and games. Furthermore, in modern society, emotional quotient has become more important than intellectual quotient.
