Admission to Fu Jen Catholic University – Carley Hsu

I chose to study at Wagor because the school offers a rich variety of extracurricular activities, foreign language resources, and a comfortable study environment.

During my three years of high school, I planned my studies based on the results of each mock exam. I also organized complex course content into tables and arranged practice questions and review schedules. Additionally, during summer and winter vacations, I actively participated in extracurricular activities and competitions to explore my interests and capacities. In the process of exam preparation, I felt occasional moments of confusion about choosing a university major. However, as the exam approached, I knew it was crucial to stay focused and avoid spending too much time pondering unanswerable questions or listening to self-doubt because these could affect my exam mindset and confidence.

I chose to study in the Journalism and Communication department because in the first year, I took a course called "Diverse Elective - Viewing the World through the Media." Initially, I enrolled in the course with the intention of developing my media literacy skills in this era of rapid information transmission. However, I unexpectedly discovered a great interest in mass communication within the curriculum. After participating in university-led camps and various extracurricular activities, I not only gained a deeper understanding of the study content related to mass communication but also truly explored my passion for expression, teamwork, and interaction with others.

I had the opportunity to conduct an interview with news anchor Luo Yi Jin from CTV News as part of a self-directed learning program. From writing invitation letters to outlining the interview, all the way to producing the final work, I gained a lot of knowledge that cannot be found in textbooks. Under the encouragement and inspiration of the anchor, my desire to pursue journalism became even stronger.

Approximately half of the graduates from Fu Jen University's Journalism and Communication department enter the news industry. You can choose from a wide range of minors and double majors offered by all 12 colleges and 56 departments in the university. Moreover, the university has sister school partnerships with over 440 universities worldwide, providing many opportunities to study abroad as an exchange student. There are also outstanding seniors in the industry, such as Fang Yu Han, Pei Wen Da, and Shen Chun Hua, who serve as role models for me to learn from.

Given a chance to do it all over again, I would still choose to attend Wagor High School. The school's foreign language resources and the platform it provides for students to showcase their abilities have been invaluable to me. The "Starry Sky" recommendation program is also a valuable pathway for furthering my education. I want to thank my past self for being courageous enough to pursue the unfamiliar, because it was through those experiences that I discovered my passion and earned the respect and pride of my parents.

Finally, I would like to say to my junior students: "Choose the path you love and walk it bravely." My parents went from opposing my decision in the beginning to eventually accepting it after having gone through many arguments. However, I proved my passion and willingness to work hard for this field through my achievements from extracurricular activities. As the president of the student council, I served my fellow students and organized various activities and learned how to create something from nothing while striving in concert with my peers. "Enjoying critical thinking, practical application, and being willing to serve" are the qualities that Fu Jen University's Journalism and Communication Department hopes its students possess. Perhaps many people have questioned my choices along this journey, but after thoroughly exploring myself, my unwavering determination cannot be shaken by anyone. "The stars do not question the wayfarers, and time does not disappoint those with a sincere heart." These are the words that encourage me when facing difficulties. As long as I am willing to work hard and truly understand myself, I will surely shine with my own brilliance!
